Christmas Movies for Empty Nest Parents and their Adult Kids!

Here are my suggestions for Christmas Movies for Empty Nest Parents and their Adult Kids, and we certainly qualify! I don’t know when you stop being Empty Nesters and become the family patriarch and matriarch? Hm.

We have always been a movie family, in fact, there are Minton Movies that are classics in our family: The Royal Tennenbaums, The Whole Nine Yards, The Ref, Christmas Vacation, The Grinch Who Stole Christmas (animated, of course!), the list goes on. Now that our chicks are adults and we have one grandchild with another one on the way, we don’t sit around and watch The Miracle on 34th Street anymore (actually, they don’t, but I do!). Here is my list of Christmas movies that my family always enjoys, no matter how old anyone gets!

Love Actually

Who doesn’t love Love Actually, the 2003 British Christmas/Love story? And what an incredible cast! Laura Linney, Hugh Grant, Liam Neeson, Alan Rickman, Emma Thompson, Keira Knightly, and Colin Firth, among others? I know the stories by heart, but they are always heartwarming to watch. My favorite parts? The beginning and the end where they show real people greeting loved ones at Heathrow Airport.

The Ref

The Ref is number one. We love this movie about a thief who ends up kidnapping a super quarrelsome couple and their son, who is headed for big trouble! It includes a snide family and neighbors, and we could watch this movie over and over! Dennis Leary, Kevin Spacey, and Judy Davis star. Take my word for it, this is fun for everyone!

Trading Places

What an oldie, but it is so awesome, and too funny! Eddie Murphy and Dan Akroyd play characters that switch places in life, one poor, one rich. Jamie Lee Curtis is hilarious as the hooker with a heart of gold.

Elf

Who doesn’t want to watch Will Ferrell as Buddy the Elf every Christmas season? With James Caan and Mary Steenburgen and Ed Asner as Santa, this movie is just as funny at 60 as it is at 20.

National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation

My daughter thinks this is the funniest Christmas movie ever! We laugh all the way through it, from the fiasco with the lights to the SQUIRREL! in the Christmas Tree!
