I promised the next post would be a round-up of the cool critters I ran into in February this year! I adore looking for critters, but it is a challenge for me because my eyesight is not fabulous. Fortunately for me, I know dive masters with great eyes who can find these tiny things!
You can Count on Fantastic Diving in Cozumel in February. And why is that? One of the reasons is Eagle Ray Season! The Eagle Rays are in Cozumel every February and March to mate and eat, so it is a great time to dive. You can also see Eagle Rays in the spring and summer, but it is a rare sighting as Eagle Rays prefer water temperatures under 80 degrees. With climate change, the summer water temperatures are 83-85 degrees. Of course, diving in Cozumel is always worthwhile.
My Octopus Teacher has been a huge hit on Netflix. I watched it and cried like a baby even though I know very well that octopuses have short life spans, depending on the species. I found it to be a beautiful documentary, and it hit very close to home as one of my favorite places to be is underwater with marine life. I agree that wild animals teach us a lot about being human. The octopus in My Octopus Teacher is a Common Octopus, but there are many species. Allow me to introduce you to some of the octopus I have been privileged to see while diving!
FUN OCTOPUS FACT: Octopuses use tools! They are quite intelligent, solving puzzles, opening jars, and even opening childproof medicine bottles!

#WORLDMANTADAY is now celebrated every September 17! I have been enthralled with Manta Rays since I was a little girl watching them glide across the water in Ft Lauderdale, Florida. I remember being with my dad in our fifth floor hotel room, looking at them through binoculars and being amazed by their size and beauty. Of course, no one knew anything about them back in the 1960s and 70s, so we weren’t allowed in the water with them. Now, we know they are Gentle Giants.
