What to do in Fort Lauderdale
Fort Lauderdale is one of the favorite vacation destinations in the US. Whether you are looking for fun or for a quiet holiday, the city thrives with options for each and every one of its visitors.
I spent a lot of time in Ft Lauderdale growing up, my family went every single summer to a family owned beach resort called Ireland’s Inn. I have so many wonderful memories of Ft Lauderdale!
From enjoying the beaches, the sun and the natural wonders, to the best shopping sites and activities such as sport fishing, snorkeling, or diving, Fort Lauderdale has a lot to offer and it is just half an hour from Miami’s restaurants and hotels! Personally, I like Ft Lauderdale better than Miami.
If you are visiting the Venice of America soon (so called for the intercoastal waterways that run through it) the recommendation is to book a car rental service so you can move around the city with freedom and at your own peace without relying on public transportation schedules.
Here are some of the best things to in while in Fort Lauderdale:
Wide, white-sand Beaches
Spending a day in any of Fort Lauderdale’s beaches is without a doubt the greatest way for strolling in the city. Apart from its blue-green waters, towering palm trees, and beautiful beachside promenades, these beaches count with the Blue Wave Certification for being considered clean, free of contaminants and safe for swimming. Variety and quality, that’s what we are talking about and in Fort Lauderdale the possibilities are unlimited to enjoy the ocean. Here are some of the best options: Deerfield Beach, for example, is ideal for families as the waters are crystal clear and the sand is perfect for building sandcastles. It is also a motorcycle-free area as well as for jet skis, alcohol and boat racing. Lauderdale-by-the-Sea is perfect for you if you are into diving, here you can swim a hundred yards from shore to discover a magnificent coral reef that’s alive with tropical fish, turtles and lobsters. Now, for those who prefer cocktails, shopping and water sports in large proportions their beach is Fort Lauderdale Beach.
Wild and nature
Digging into wild natural wonders is also possible in of Fort Lauderdale where you are able to witness the surrounding exotic flora and fauna, and even wildlife from alligators to Florida panthers! In case you didn’t know, Fort Lauderdale is the gateway to the Everglades, making up almost two-thirds of the destination’s total area! This means that taking an airboat ride and exploring all this wild beauty is a must if you are in Fort Lauderdale. What is more, The Everglades also is home to the Seminole Indians, who invite visitors to learn about their proud, ancient culture. You can also visit Butterfly World featuring the largest butterfly aviary in North America, as well as a huge insectarium and a hummingbird environment, or explore the Mizell-Johnson State Park in Dania Beach. The park offers fishing, canoeing and other boating, and one of the area’s most important turtle nesting beaches!!
Water Taxis and Gondolas
One of the most iconic ways to see Fort Lauderdale is by taking a water taxi tour or a gondola ride, but otherwise your best option will always be your car rental Fort Lauderdale. Now, if you want to enjoy a real inspiring on-the-water experience through the famous intercoastal, water taxis have routes that cruise Fort Lauderdale to see the best sights, visit restaurants and hit the beach. Some of the most recommended taxi water tours include Water Shuttle at 300 SW 1st Ave, Fort Lauderdale, Water Taxi Stop #4 at 1881 SE 17th St, Fort Lauderdale, or Riverwalk Water Trolley at Riverwalk North, Fort Lauderdale. If you are in a more romantic mood, you can always take a gondola ride where you can just sit back and relax with your boo while you enjoy the view of some of the most luxurious homes and gardens in Fort Lauderdale at the cozy speed of a gondola. Some recommended gondola tours are Las Olas Gondola in in downtown Fort Lauderdale at the end of SE 1st Avenue, Riverfront Gondola Tours at 1200 East Las Olas Blvd, Ft Lauderdale, or Gondolas West at 801 Seabreeze Blvd. Fort Lauderdale.
Shopping in Swap Shop
The Swap Shop is a fun attraction where you can shop, play video games, go on roller coasters, enjoy a drive in movie theater, and much more. This is an indoor-outdoor flea market with approximately 2,000 vendors selling anything and everything on God’s green earth; from produced and fresh food to new and used goods and antiques. The market is open 7 days a week (Mondays to Wednesdays & Fridays from 9am to 5:00 pm. Thursdays from 8:00am to 5:00pm. Saturdays & Sundays from 8:00am to 5:30pm). The complex also features several indoor eateries and a carnival atmosphere of mariachi music that will make you shopping time a unique experience. If you stay until the market has closed you’ll be able to catch a flick as the entire space is transformed into a 14-screen outdoor theater!! This is without a doubt a South Florida icon you cannot miss.
