I haven’t thought about my first kiss in quite a while, but with Valentines coming up, I started thinking about it.
How nervous I was! I am sure he was too.
It was at my 13th birthday party. I had a boyfriend, Jeff, who made my heart go pitter-patter. We were in junior high, a sweet first love.
Of course, I was quite tall in junior high. 5’7″ or thereabouts. When I was a teenager, boys took much longer to hit puberty. In junior high they still had high voices and had not hit a growth spurt. Dilemma: how romantic is it to lean down for your first kiss?
A close friend of both of ours, John, gave us some help with this issue. He brought over a little step-stool, Jeff stood on it, and we had our first kiss!
I have never lived it down! Every time I see John he brings it up, he loves to think about Jeff and I and our first kiss on a stepping stool. John also tells another funny story. You see, John’s first day at his new school was in third grade. I have always felt sympathy for the “new kids” and I’ve always been friendly to them. John says the first person to say hi to him was Jeff (yes, Jeff of the stepping stool). Jeff said, “watch out for Tammy, she likes all the boys.” Who was the second person to say hi? Tammy (that’s me). And yes, I always liked the boys better. But that’s another story!
Anyway, my memories of the first kiss are sweet and innocent, down in my basement at my 13th birthday party, with everyone watching, basically. It was the seventies, bell bottoms and peasant blouses and long hair reigned. So long ago, but still fresh in memory. Thank you, Jeff, for a lovely memory, and thanks John, for bringing the step-stool!

I also remain friends with my first kisser and we remember it differently but we both remember it. We had a lot of firsts together in high school and later in college. Those memories are so dear!
