Fabulous Photo Friday: The Cool Critters under the Sea!

What do you know about the cool critters under the sea? There are so many of them, and I would love to give you an introduction! Let’s take a look at Shrimps, a type of crustacean! These are not the kind you eat, by the way! These are the fascinating cool critters you see when you scuba dive.

A beautiful Mantis Shrimp in Thailand’s Andaman Sea

Crustaceans are arthropods. What is an arthropod? They are jointed creatures like insects, spiders, or crustaceans. My son loves to tell me that ocean crustaceans are the insects of the sea. He is correct, and like insects, they often have many legs. Shrimp, crabs, lobsters, barnacles and hermit crabs are all crustaceans. Let’s take a look at various types of shrimp! Some are so tiny one can barely see them, others are a bit larger. All are fascinating cool critters!

This is a Mantis Shrimp! Their “boxing gloves” in the middle are strong enough to break an aquarium!
This is a very small Squat Anemone Shrimp. Maybe a 1/4 inch?
The focus on this Coral Banded Shrimp is on the antennae. So cool!
Here is a cute Banded Coral Shrimp posing for me in a Sponge Barrel! This guy is sooo tiny! Maybe the body is an inch?
Pontoniine shrimp of Raja Ampat, Indonesia
Cool Shrimp from Asia, but I’m having trouble finding the precise ID!
These shrimps do an important job for other animals, cleaning them of parasites.
Bumblebee Shrimp, Indonesia
Look at the size of this tiny shrimp! Isn’t it cute?
Gorgeous Harlequin Shrimps in Thailand’s Andaman Sea
A spotted cleaner shrimp…so tiny, I love the blue!
A Two Clawed Shrimp!!!
These are cute Durban Dancing Shrimps in Thailand!
Pederson Shrimp in Corkscrew Anemone
Awesome tiny Two Claw Shrimp.
I really love this photo of a Peacock Mantis Shrimp taken in Indonesia
This tiny little dude is a Rough Back Shrimp. I just saw a spot of green moving, and didn’t realize what it was. I’m so glad the photo turned out so I could see it! It had to be less than the size of my pinkie nail!
Beautiful Spotted Cleaner Shrimp in Cozumel.
This Flamingo Tongue Mollusk is two inches or so, so that lets you know how very tiny this Orange Featherstar Shrimp in Cozumel is!
Look closely, there are several shrimps all over the place and on the octopus, too!
