5 Wonderful Winter Holiday Ideas For This Year

Wonderful Winter Holiday Ideas! Some people are sad when we wave goodbye to summer. Personally, I think winter is one of the best times of the year to go traveling! There are so many unique travel ideas out there that can only be done during the coldest months of the year. Such as….

…looking at some of the most wonderful winter holiday ideas that will quench your thirst for traveling this year. Please give them a read, and I’d love to know if you have any suggestions to add to this!

Ski Trip

Sure, there’s no hot sun in winter, so you can’t really go and sunbathe on a sandy beach. But, you do get plenty of gorgeous snow! And be sure to wear sunscreen, you can get a sunburn on the slopes! Be sure to use a biodegradable sunscreen! Not only that, but you get the chance to try out loads of different winter activities and sports – with skiing being the most popular. So much so that there are holiday packages you can book where you go to an actual ski school and learn how to ski on some of the most amazing slopes around. Or, if you already know how to, you can book a week away in a luxury ski lodge somewhere lovely (the Alps are always a great ski resort, and some French mountain ranges are perfect too). It’s such a unique holiday idea as you get to do something active while enjoying the fantastic sights and scenes of a snowy mountain range.

If you really want to enjoy the ski season, then you can actually find programs where you get a place in a ski lodge for the whole season in exchange for voluntary work at the resort!

Scandinavian Travels

Look, you know I’m a big fan of going to Scandinavia already. I recently posted an article talking about planning a trip to Norway, so feel free to give that a read if you’re interested! It goes without saying that this part of the world is picture perfect during winter. They see a lot of snow, and the cities and towns get transformed into literal snow globes. Sweden is a beautiful place to visit during the winter time, and Denmark is also equally beautiful. Then, there’s the most ‘winter’ place of all; Finland. If you don’t know what Finland has to offer, then allow me to explain. Lapland is in this country, which many people say is the home of Santa Claus! Finland is a great family holiday destination, but there’s enough stuff to do in the whole of Scandinavia for a lovely winter tour on your own.

See The Northern Lights

The aurora borealis, one of the world’s most amazing natural wonders. Most people won’t ever get to see the gorgeous Northern Lights in all their glory. But, winter is the best chance you’ll get. There are loads of countries that you can view these lights from, but Iceland is probably the best. It offers impressive views that can’t be rivaled, and there’s also the bonus of it being a unique country. Iceland is incredibly small, but there is an abundance of things to do there. While you’re enjoying the Northern Lights, you could take a dip in the iconic Blue Lagoon. This is a natural thermal spring that’s considered one of the best natural spas in the world.

New York City

My final winter holiday idea is simple; New York City. There aren’t many words that can describe this great city during winter, it merely transforms into the most fantastic setting on earth. Central Park becomes a snowy paradise, there are loads of great Christmas-themed treats around, and it feels like a movie come to life. There’s the legendary ice rink at the Rockefeller Center, winter markets, and the added benefit of some of the best shopping deals on the planet. It’s the perfect place to go for a few days in winter if you want to feel really Christmassy or get into the festive spirit.

Typical wooden Christmas carousel, Munich, Bavaria, Germany, at a Christmas market.

Bonus: German Christmas Markets

Here is my dream Christmas destination! Head to Germany this winter to try some of the authentic German Christmas markets. We’re talking amazing food, warm mulled wine, and an incredible atmosphere. All the Christmas markets around the world are modeled on these, so why not try the original?

I hope this gives you a few ideas for a wonderful winter holiday this year! If you’ve already been on any of these holidays, then I’d love to hear any stories in the comments.
