Enjoy a Fascinating Stroll through Downtown New Braunfels

Stroll through Downtown New Braunfels! On a recent visit to New Braunfels, Texas, between San Antonio and Austin, I took a Saturday morning stroll with Jan Kingsbury of SPASS Walking Tours. Jan has lived in New Braunfels for most of her life, and knows the city very well indeed! I was fascinated by the history and color of the town. Let’s start our walk at the Farmers Market, open every Saturday!

I loved this booth! These rain chimes and wind chimes are made out of bottles! I loved the coke bottles.

No walk through the German town of New Braunfels is complete without seeing the town murals!
German food and the New Braunfels “founders”
Ferdinand Jacob Lindheimer was a German Texan botanist who spent his life studying plants. In 1936, Recorded Texas Historic Landmark number 1590 was placed on Lindheimer’s grave.

After landing at Galveston on December 12, 1843, Hermann Seele joined the Adelsverein (a colonization society of German nobles) and arrived in May 1845 in the month-old city of New Braunfels, which became his home for the rest of his life. He was a teacher, founder of the newspaper, a poet, a lawyer, a legislator, and a Major in the Texas Militia. He had an enormous impact on the new city of New Braunfels.

Music has always been an important aspect of New Braunfels!
The Comal County Courthouse was designed by J. Riely Gordon in the Romanesque Revival style in 1898. It has been beautifully restored.

The town was founded by a Prince, and the murals will give you a lot of information about Prince Carl of Solms-Braunfel.

Upper left is Prince Carl’s castle in Braunfels, Germany. His direct descendents are still there.

The First Protestant Church of New Braunfels has been there since 1845.

On the lawn the original bells from the church, which was founded as the German Protestant Church.

A stroll through New Braunfels must take you to Naegelins Bakery! These pies look heavenly, so do the cupcakes, and their strudel was the best I’ve ever tasted.

The downtown shops are so original and filled with antiques.

Welcome to Henne’s Hardware, which is almost untouched since it opened!

Last but not least is Schlitterbahn, right in the town itself! The world’s coolest water park is powered with clean spring and river water! This castle was built to honor Prince Carl, the founder of New Braunfels.
