Great Tips to Help You Enjoy Safe Travels While You are Abroad

Great tips to help you enjoy safe travels while you are abroad!

Beautiful Dresden, Germany

Going on a first big trip can be exciting, but it comes with a certain level of apprehension. After all, this will possibly be your first time in a completely new country where the culture, language, and customs are different from your own. So, it’s only right that you get mentally and physically prepared for the trip. Thankfully, there are some things that you can do to assure yourself of safe travels. Here are some essential safety tips for people travelling abroad.

Get Insurance

One of the first things you should do, and that people often neglect, is get travel insurance. Single trip travel insurance from a company like Staysure will cover you for any health issues that might arise in another country, and more. Travel insurance can also cover things like cancellations or if you have a medical emergency. These are all things that could put a serious dampener on any trip, and being covered will give you some extra peace of mind. Not to mention that you will only have to pay one time. So, we strongly suggest you get coverage before you leave unless you’re already covered by your credit card or employer.

About Money

Now let’s talk about the money situation. If you want to be covered, we suggest you bring only the strict minimum with you as far as money options go. You should leave with some of the local currency and a few pounds as well. When it comes to cards, only bring your ATM card, primary credit card, and a prepaid card. Also, make sure you inform your bank about your travel plans so that they don’t put a stop on your card.

Many banking institutions will have a special travel prepaid card that you can bring. What’s great about those is that you can top them up with only what you need, so if someone forces you to make a withdrawal, or if they manage to get their hands on it another way, then you’ll be able to limit the amount of money you lose. This is the only card you should be walking around with. Your main one should only be used as a backup.

Blend In

You want to blend in as much as possible when traveling. The last thing you want to do is look like a tourist target. Learn about the dress code wherever you’re going. Being dressed up or down could actually single you out in a crowd. If you have any valuables, leave them in the hotel’s safe where they should be. Don’t flash your cash if possible, and always keep any bags you may have in your direct line of vision. Keep that expensive laptop locked up when you go out! And don’t forget to buy a cheap phone before you leave so that you can leave your more expensive model at home. Expensive cell phones are magnets for pick pockets!

What to Do if Important Documents Get Stolen

You also have to be aware of what you should do if something major happens, such as if you are a victim of theft, or you end up losing an important document like a passport.

If you’re a victim of a theft, the first thing you should do is alert the authorities. And make sure that you get a copy of the police report, as this is the only way you’ll be able to get compensated by your insurance company. If you lose a card, or it was stolen, make sure to contact your carrier ASAP. And if you lost your passport, then you should contact the embassy straight away and follow the proper procedures.

These few simple tips should help you enjoy your stay and make sure that you’re safe while you’re there. It’s really about having your wits about you, making sure that you stay as discreet as possible, and getting the proper coverage before leaving.
