Sun. Marinas. Beaches and places to swim. Oh, and did we mention the sun? On the face of it, San Diego, California, is the perfect holiday hotspot — especially if you love nothing more than working on your tan.

But the amazing climate isn’t the only reason to forge a path to San Diego. This is also a location teeming with things to do. If you want good food, come to San Diego. If you want amazing nightlife, visit San Diego. If you want the best culture…well, you get the idea. Los Angeles is always hogging the sun-kissed Californian spotlight, but San Diego has a lot to offer. To show you more of sunny California’s unsung city, here are a few favorite places in San Diego.

The Airport

San Diego International Airport is a hive of activity at all times, and not only because of the prolific number of passengers it receives every day. There’s also a wealth of amenities, eateries and fun things to do in this international flight hub.

From the entrance onwards, you’ll see a rush of businesses plying their trade, whether that’s private parking aficionados Looking4.com or the delectable food chain California Pizza Kitchen. The airport is so impressive that it even offers tours to avid flight enthusiasts, giving you the chance to peek behind the scenes of San Diego’s most complex enterprise.

Balboa Park is an Aladdin’s cave of cultural treats, an expansive 1,200-acre urban cultural park which stands proudly in the heart of San Diego and offers a range of museums, open-air theaters, and the world-famous San Diego Zoo.

Come rain or shine, this is a tourist hotspot, in part for its wealth of attractions but also because of its well-tended gardens and seating areas. If you’re new to San Diego, this should be your first port of call.

USS Midway Museum

Our boys in blue should be honored no matter where you are, and the USS Midway Museum is the perfect opportunity to do just that. A landmark which showcases the best in military hardware from throughout the centuries sure sound swell to us. We recommend you pay it a visit.

Gaslamp Quarter

A vibrant nightlife is easy to come by in San Diego, especially if you make your way to the Gaslamp Quarter, the city’s sector for dive bars, cocktail lounges and indie restaurants. If you’re in the mood for dining a la carte, then the Quarter’s Horton Plaza Park is teeming with a slew of ice cream vendors and coffee stalls.

Mission Beach

If your idea of a good day out involves lounging on a beach with a cocktail in-hand, then Mission Beach is the place for you. This is a chilled out environment which attracts sunbathers, surfers, and volleyball players. Sounds pretty perfect to us.
