The town’s deep-rooted history with the poppies began when Henry Purl Compton (aka “Okra”), a soldier in the American Expeditionary Forces during WWI, sent poppy seeds from Europe back home to his mother in Georgetown, Texas. His mother planted the seeds at her home located at 507 East 7th St. and with some help from the birds, bees, and people of Georgetown, the seeds quickly spread beyond her home all over town. In 1990, Georgetown was certified by the Texas Legislature as the “Red Poppy Capital of Texas.” The town embraces the 20th anniversary celebrating the vivid blooming, with three days of live music and festivities, free and open to the public.
