Fab Photos Friday: Shark Week!

It is Shark Week on the Discovery Channel, and unfortunately, the “fantastic” and “scary” (and sometimes untrue) takes precedence, so I thought I’d show you some of the sharks I have known and loved!  I had an overly exciting minute with a Great White, but other than that, my experiences with sharks have been of awe, but not fear.  They really are not the man eating, evil creatures depicted on most of shark week.  I promise!

The biggest shark in the ocean doesn’t have teeth!
Randy and I with a huge whale shark off of Isla Mujeres. They can be up to 40 feet!
Beautiful, graceful animals.
White Tip babies at San Benedicto off of Mexico
Nurse Sharks at Chankanaab Parque, Cozumel, Mexico
Nurse sharks grow up to 7 or 8 feet, and are not aggressive unless molested.
Randy on course with a Nurse Shark
My daughter examines a nurse shark back in 2006
Nurse Sharks are quite pretty, with pebbly skin.
Zapata, a famous 15 foot male at Guadalupe Island, Mexico
Zapata got in a fight, it appears, with another Great White.
The 30 ft submersible cage at Guadalupe.
Well, accidents happen. check out my blog about Great White Shark Adventures for the full story!
The fabulous Scalloped Hammerhead!

These are just a few of my photos, I’ve seen other species, but sometimes they just have not been close enough for a decent photo.  I have never seen any of these sharks display aggression to humans, including the Great Whites.  The cage incident was an accident, not an “attack”, check out my Close Encounter with a Great White.  We NEED our sharks in our oceans.  They are a necessary part of the food chain.  It’s very important to protect them!  Check out the Shark Alliance!

Black Tip after finning
unsustainable slaughter of rays and sharks in Mozambique
Cutting them up and finning the sharks in the town square. They wouldn’t let us too close.
