You can Count on Fantastic Diving in Cozumel in February!

You can Count on Fantastic Diving in Cozumel in February. And why is that? One of the reasons is Eagle Ray Season! The Eagle Rays are in Cozumel every February and March to mate and eat, so it is a great time to dive. You can also see Eagle Rays in the spring and summer, but it is a rare sighting as Eagle Rays prefer water temperatures under 80 degrees. With climate change, the summer water temperatures are 83-85 degrees. Of course, diving in Cozumel is always worthwhile.

You can bank on seeing Eagle Rays in February and into March, and you never know where they might be! They could be in deep or shallow waters, but it is always exciting to see those adorable “smiling” faces. Be sure to check out my video from YouTube, embedded below to get the full majesty of these amazing rays!

Of course, there are plenty of fishes in the sea in Cozumel, and the truth is that diving is great all year around. Check out some fishy friends!

A Lionfish face. They are beautiful but venomous, and they are an invasive species in the Atlantic
Two Scorpionfish hanging out. Look for the eyes!
This teeny tiny fish is a Fringed Filefish. They move fast and are smaller than an inch
This is a Slender Filefish, just as small but you can see the differences!
Peacock Flounder
Here are two Sand Divers sitting around
I love this toothy grin!
Aren’t those little teeth cute?
Yellowtail Damselfish are absolutely stunning fish, but very fast and shy. I was thrilled to get this photo!
A Barred Hamlet, another shy little fish!
The small Blue Chromis is also hard to photograph because of their speed
Talk about shy! Kind of like an ostrich with its head in the sand, this Sargassum Triggerfish thinks it is hiding
I really love watching Whitespotted Filefish, they look so suspicious!
The intermediate phase of the Stoplight Parrotfish. If you can believe it, this fish grows into the next fish!
This is the Stoplight Parrot in the terminal phase, fully grown and beautiful.
Bluestriped grunts school and shoal together.
Porkfish like to hang together as well!
These Sand Tilefishes look surprised to see me.
A cutie pie! Porcupinefish has enough tetrodotoxin to kill 30 people, so don’t eat it.
The Great Barracuda always looks menacing
Face to face with a Nurse Shark
My first photo of a Butter Hamlet. Isn’t she gorgeous?
The elusive Rock Beauty
The Coney belongs to the Grouper Family
Threespot Damselfish Juvenile
I had amazing luck this trip with Yellowtail Damselfish
These baby Spotted Drumfish are very tiny, I was thrilled to get a face photo
It was a great trip for Hamlets and Damsels! A Bicolor Damsel letting me know it’s territory.
How cool is this Maculated Flounder face????
A young Black Grouper
Green Moray Eel
A French Angel protecting a Green Moray
A Goldentail Eel
Spotted Moray Eel
A Spinyhead Blenny! They are maybe 1/4 of an inch, and so fast!!!
Bicolor Damselfish
Cozumel’s Splendid Toadfish

The next diving in Cozumel post will be critters!
