What an amazing trip to the Sea of Cortez and the Baja! I was excited to put together a small group trip to the Sea of Cortez with Red Travel Mexico for December 3-9, 2017. Red Travel Mexico is an eco-friendly tour company operating on the Mexican Baja, and recommended by National Geographic. I wanted to dive Cabo Pulmo, a marine sanctuary that has made a big comeback thanks to the designation of national marine park. Dr Sylvia Earle of Mission Blue has been a big supporter of the project. Dr Sylvia Earle is to fish what Dr Jane Goodall is to chimps! I wanted to see the results of the project to bring back this site to a healthy state, and Red Travel Mexico and I put together a trip to do just that!

A group of six (myself included) and a guide met on December 3rd in Cabo Pulmo, Mexico to begin an exciting 6 day itinerary in the Sea of Cortez. Our first stop was the village of Cabo Pulmo, a rustic little town on the Sea of Cortez. We stayed at the Cabo Pulmo Beach Resort, and started our diving and snorkeling the very next day.

Janet and Tom…what a fun couple they are!

Cabo Pulmo is small, rustic, and undeveloped, and it was a nice break from huge resort areas with hundreds of divers and snorkelers. The boats were small, the dive companies few. Our first trip out was without our snorkeler as she did a snorkel trip from a different boat. Our first dive? Bull Sharks!

Now, I’m not crazy about bull sharks. Don’t get me wrong. I love sharks. But I’ve had a little accident with a Great White Shark as you may recall, (http://tamtravels.wpengine.com/close-encounter-with-a-great-white-shark/), and with Bull Sharks there is no cage. (Same with Tiger Sharks…I’m a little nervous). So I can’t say I was thrilled about the idea of diving with a group of Bull Sharks. But, as soon as I saw them checking us out, I wanted them to come closer so I could get a better photo! Damn! They were huge, every bit as big as the Great White I had an encounter with. Come closer, Bull Shark! They kept their distance, my photos aren’t great, but I think they give you the idea! It was awesome to see these huge predators! The health of the Reefs of Cabo Pulmo is evidenced by these giant apex predators. If they are there, the populations are healthy! I have to admit, it was a rush to see them! Instead of fear, I just wanted them to come closer. They are gorgeous, truly!

Amazing.

What a beautiful animal!

There were at least a dozen Bull Sharks swimming around!

Stay Tuned, there was so much excitement, too much for just one post!
