Fun on the island of Cozumel!
I always have fun, fun, fun when I come to my second home, the island of Cozumel in the Mexican Caribbean! From friends to fabulous restaurants to great boat dives and great shore dives and tourist attractions like the awesome Cozumel Pearl Farm, there is always something to do! My 2018 summer trip is almost over, but the memories will last forever. Take a look at what I’ve been up to on Cozumel!

I’ve been diving here for longer than I want to admit (30 years!), but there is always something new! That is always exciting for divers. Cozumel is famous for incredible, towering pinnacles of coral, so beautiful and so colorful it is a wonder to see. Turtles, eels, nurse sharks, fish…and the amazing drift diving is always a draw. When the Cozumel drift is just right, you barely have to kick, drifting happily down the reef, where the boat will always be waiting to pick you up. Fabulous!
However, I have been concentrating on shore diving. I’ve done shore dives before, but I have found a spot, known to locals and expats in Cozumel, where I have seen animals I never knew existed here. I have been going to a shore dive spot off of the Tikila Restaurant, north of the international port. Mario, of Scuba with Mario, has introduced me to an exciting array of critters I am thoroughly enjoying…I can’t get enough of them! He is a terrific dive master and instructor, and I highly recommend him for anyone wanting to try diving, see Cozumel’s critter diving, or divers looking for superior customer service. He is a terrific photographer and shares his photos with his customers. Going to Cozumel? Be sure to get in touch with him.
Diving off Tikila is shallow, under 25 feet, which is great for those who want endless bottom time and lengthy dives. My dives are generally 90 minutes or so, and I love photographing the small critters I never really saw much of before, if I saw them at all. You don’t have to be a diver to enjoy the area, the snorkeling is awesome, too. Be sure to check it out next time you go to the island!

Cozumel is a Fantastic Culinary Destination!
I love Cozumel, Mexico, a beautiful island in the Mexican Caribbean. It offers so much to visitors like world class diving, snorkeling, and yes, fantastic culinary delights! I know people in the USA are on edge about visiting Mexico these days, but let me tell you, I feel safer here than I do in my home in Dallas, and I’m betting you will too!
First Class Fine Dining Experiences
Yes, you read that correctly. What are fabulous restaurants doing on a casual, breezy island in the Mexican Caribbean? Well, why shouldn’t you have fine dining along with an easy going ambiance? I love these establishments, and I would love them anywhere in the world! Here are my top three:
- Buccanos at Night. Original, inventive, delicious culinary masterpieces overlooking the Caribbean ocean, owned and managed by a creative, talented family. The scenery, ambiance, and traditional yet casual elegance is a plus to the main event: the food! How can I describe it? How about with photos? And of course, check out their incredible menu, plus they always have nightly specials! You simply cannot visit the island without dining at Buccanos. Period!
2. La Cocay
My family has been dining at La Cocay for many, many years. We have celebrated birthdays, anniversaries, and just good times at this fantastic Cozumel restaurant. It is Mediterranean, with tapas and my favorite salad on the planet: the Napa Salad. Don’t miss La Cocay when you visit!
Another fabulous Cozumel institution! No one can visit the island without eating at Guidos! A family favorite, I cannot count how many people we have taken to Guidos over the years. They are famous for their garlic bread! Guido’s is an iconic Cozumel eatery!
Come on down to Cozumel, and bring your appetite!

I finished my international travel of 2017 in Mexico. First, a fantastic and fun trip in October to my second home in Cozumel (we rent it! www.vrbo.com/368692) with three of my blogger friends, and a wonderful trip in December to the Sea of Cortez and La Paz with Red Travel Mexico! I love both coasts of Mexico, they are so radically different. The east side is jungle and rain forest with calm, clear, blue waters, and the west is almost desert, with mountains and the ocean waves. Both are beautiful.

Are you ready for more amazing travel photos from 2017?
Raja Ampat means the “four kings” in Indonesian. Raja Ampat is an archipelago with four main islands, or “kings” in West Papua. They are Misool, Waigeo, Batanta, and Salawati, and I had the privilege of diving all of them, and participating with Ray of Hope Expeditions in citizen science. Dr Andrea Marshall led the expedition. The photography opportunities were amazing above, and below, the waterline!
I love Cozumel, and have been there many times. My summer trip was highlighted by a wedding on my lawn, whale sharks, Isla Mujeres and its turtle farm, and my cousins coming to visit.
